Miroku is a man who has made his way through life by cheating, stealing and lying. His trick is to make people believe there is a 'dark spirit' looming over their household, and then 'exorsising' it, while getting a free bed and supper in the process. Even though he does use dirty tricks a lot of the time, Miroku is a gentle, honest man.
Even though on the outside Miroku doesn't seem to fear much, he has one thing he is more scared of than anything. His Kazanna, or Wind Tunnel, in his right hand. It is a curse that has been passed down since his grandfather was given it after a battle with a shape changing demon. The Wind Tunnel acts like a black hole, sucking up anything in it's path.
Miroku becomes more involved with the Shikon Jewel quest when he founds out that Naraku had been the one who had stolen the jewel. Naraku was the demon that had cursed his grandfather all those years ago.
The Wind Tunnel is normally sealed by prayer beads wrapped around his hand. It will slowly grow over time and can be aggravated if treated badly. Unless Naraku is defeated and the curse lifted, the Wind tunnel will eventually grow beyond his hand and become uncontrollable, engulfing Miroku himself before disappearing. That had been the fate of his father and grandfather.
